PROJECT BREAKDOWN

Project Self Sustainment is a dynamic platform with the ambition to empower individuals and local communities with the opportunity to mitigate the arising threats posed from the centralisation of information. This including the significant dependency we've allocated to centralised monopolies for the information that defines our future. The project contains an ever-growing database containing critical information related to self-sustainment. We use information to formulate our perception which cultivates the behaviour which defines our future. Scarcity in many cases corresponds to value, and aligning our dependency on the centralised systems for the information that defines our future, we are aligning our future with the growing threats cyberattacks pose in the digital landscape we interact with everyday. Find further on this page the mission statement including an article I've written regarding cyberattacks for further context.

This project also contains available tasks, facilitating the opportunity for everyone of all skill levels to take direct action in decentralising their dependency on external systems for the information they depend on, steering the goals and ambition of this initiative. Find in this project:

  • A Database: A community-driven database continually updated every 2 months, featuring resources on survival, agriculture, technology, and more which can be viewed below.

  • Streamlined Documentation: Find a basic overview guiding you on how to store, preserve, and access this information in an event of a digital threat.

  • Open Participation: Dynamic goals and opportunities for anyone to contribute to the ambition of this project, whether it be through tasks, resource contributions, or community outreach.

  • Additional Project Materials: Leaflets & other artefacts showcasing the project's ambition.

Overview

MISSION STATEMENT

Did you know that 2024 has recorded the most cyberattacks globally so far? [Source] We rely on information to shape our perception, which influences the behaviour that determines our future. The internet plays an integral role in providing us access to the crucial information that we use to formulate perception. However, society has increasingly become dependent on the centralised systems that uphold the internet for accessing and storing this essential data. This strain of dependency has especially grown in the UK, as from the last decade approximately 800 public libraries have been closed, representing about 20% of the total [Source]. Since value corresponds to scarcity, this collective reliance places the control and influence of our future in the hands of the monopolies that are highly vulnerable to digital threats such as cyberattacks.

GET STARTED

Find below four sections containing recommended steps to take when reinforcing the integrity and accessibility of your data, including information on what storage device to get, how to read the data from the storage device, ways to power your systems, alongside the database itself. For more details on cyberattacks and what else you should do to prepare, check out this article.

If technology isn't something you're familiar with, following these steps can feel overwhelming, To support your research, feel free to leverage AI bots like ChatGPT as a sounding board for support, alongside public forums like Reddit where you can get advice on your research. Alternatively you can reach out here and we'll be more than happy to support you.

Storage Solutions
When you're setting up your storage solutions, keep in mind that the database is around 200-300GB, and it will be expanding by the months. To accommodate future updates and extra information, it's recommended to invest in USB drive or portable SSD with at least 500GB in storage space. Here’s a quick rundown of each option:

USB Drives:
Pros: Portable and convenient, USB drives are fantastic for quick access and can easily connect to various devices. They’re usually more affordable than SSDs, making them a great budget-friendly option.
Cons: Typically slower than SSDs and may not be as durable over time, which can be a concern if you're relying on them for crucial data.

Portable SSDs:
Pros: Solid-state drives provide faster data access and are more durable since they have no moving parts. Their compact size is ideal for storing large amounts of data, especially in emergency situations.
Cons: They usually cost more than traditional USB drives, which could be a factor if you’re working with a tight budget.

Recommended Drives:

  • Samsung Bar: This USB drive is well-known for its sleek design and reliable performance, making it a top choice among users.

  • SanDisk Extreme Pro: This drive is favored for its high-speed data transfer capabilities and rugged durability, perfect for both everyday use and emergency situations.

  • Samsung T7 Portable SSD: If you're leaning toward a portable SSD, the Samsung T7 offers lightning-fast transfer speeds and solid durability, ideal for accessing critical files quickly.

Quantity Recommendations:

To minimize the risk of the storage unit malfunctioning, risking complete data loss, it is a reasonable recommendation to get two drives to ensure you have backups in case a device fails.
